Car Rental Chania — Airport Pick-Up, No Deposit Options, Full Insurance

Car rental in Chania is most convenient straight from Chania Airport (CHQ / Ioannis Daskalogiannis), on the Akrotiri peninsula about 14 km from town, where local Cretan agencies and the international chains keep desks. Chania's airport is famously calm and easy compared with busy Heraklion. Economy cars start from around €20–€32 per day, and choosing Super CDW (full insurance) at about €10–€23/day brings the excess to zero and usually means no deposit is blocked on your card.

Chania is the perfect base for western Crete, the island's most spectacular corner. With a car you can reach the lagoons of Balos and Elafonissi, walk the Samaria Gorge, swim at Falassarna and explore the wild south-west coast around Sougia and Paleochora — all far easier from here than from the east. Crete has no tolls; the northern national road is wide and free, while the mountain roads to the gorges and beaches are scenic and mostly well surfaced.

Why Rent a Car in Chania

Chania is, for many, the most beautiful town in Crete — its Venetian harbour, lighthouse and tangle of old-town lanes are a joy on foot. But the real reason to rent a car here is what lies beyond: western Crete holds the island's most famous natural sights, and almost all of them need wheels to reach. The bus network serves the main routes, but the lagoons, gorges and south-coast villages are scattered across mountainous country where a car turns a half-day excursion into a relaxed day of your own.

As an independent comparison service, our advice for Chania is simple: this is the airport to choose if your trip is about western Crete. The desks are calmer than Heraklion's, the local agencies offer excellent all-in value, and you're quickly onto the national road or up into the White Mountains. Keep to paved roads to protect your insurance — the Balos track is the notable exception worth thinking twice about.

Car Rental at Chania Airport (CHQ)

Chania Airport, Ioannis Daskalogiannis (CHQ), sits on the Akrotiri peninsula about 14 km northeast of the town. It's a smaller, calmer airport than Heraklion, and pick-up here is one of the most relaxed in Greece — a real plus after a long flight. Rental desks are in and beside the arrivals area, with cars in the adjacent car park, and local Cretan agencies operate alongside the international chains.

Pre-book online in summer to secure your car category and rate; automatics and larger cars for family trips to the gorges go first. Many agencies also deliver to hotels in Chania town and the western resorts if you'd rather not collect at the airport on arrival.

Documents and age. Bring your driving licence (held at least a year), passport or ID, and the booking voucher. EU/EEA licences are accepted directly; non-EU drivers must carry an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25.

Driving in Chania: Roads and Parking

Western Crete is rewarding to drive, with the toll-free national road for distance and scenic mountain roads for the gorges and beaches.

Roads

The northern national road (E75/A90) runs east from Chania to Rethymno and Heraklion — wide, fast and free. Heading south and west toward Omalos, Elafonissi and the coast, the roads climb and wind through the White Mountains; they're scenic and mostly well surfaced, with a few demanding stretches. The exception is the Balos track from Kissamos: long, rough and unpaved, where a 2WD struggles and rental insurance generally won't cover off-road damage — many visitors take the boat instead.

Parking

Park outside Chania Old Town. The Venetian centre and harbour are pedestrian and the lanes are tiny. Use one of the car parks on the edge of the old town (near the market or the marina) and walk in. Elafonissi and Falassarna have paid parking that fills early in summer — arrive before mid-morning.

Rules to Remember

Insurance & Deposit in Chania

The insurance logic is the same across Crete. Basic CDW leaves you liable up to a high excess pre-authorised on a credit card; Super CDW (SCDW / Full Damage Waiver) reduces it to zero and, with most local agencies, removes the deposit. It costs about €10–€23 per day.

Chania is exactly where the exclusions bite, because of the famous Balos track and other beach roads. Even on full insurance, tyres, wheels, glass, mirrors, the undercarriage and lost keys are commonly excluded unless explicitly listed, and driving on unpaved roads voids cover entirely — so think hard before taking a 2WD down to Balos. Photograph the car on every panel and wheel at pick-up and return.
