Why Rent a Car in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and the cultural capital of the north, and while the centre is wonderfully walkable, the real case for a car is everything within an hour or three of it. This is the corner of Greece where mythology, history and beaches sit close together: you can stand at the foot of Mount Olympus in the morning, see the gold of the Macedonian royal tombs at Vergina in the afternoon, and be on a Halkidiki beach by evening. None of that is comfortable by bus.
As an independent comparison service, our recommendation here is the same as for the rest of Greece: collect the car at the airport (SKG) for the widest choice and the cleanest exit onto the ring road and motorways. Keep it parked while you explore central Thessaloniki on foot, and let it come into its own for the day trips and the drive down to the beaches.

Car Rental at Thessaloniki Airport (SKG)
Thessaloniki Airport, Makedonia (SKG), lies about 15 km southeast of the city at Mikra, on the edge of the Halkidiki road — which makes it a natural starting point if the beaches are your first stop. Rental desks are in the arrivals area, with cars in the adjacent car park. The international chains operate alongside a solid choice of local Greek agencies, which generally offer the better all-in value.
Pre-book online in summer to secure both the car category and the rate, especially for automatics and larger cars heading to Halkidiki. If you arrive on a late flight, confirm the pick-up hours and any out-of-hours fee in advance.
Documents and age. Bring your driving licence (held at least a year), passport or ID, and the booking voucher. EU/EEA licences are accepted directly; non-EU drivers must carry an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25.
Thessaloniki Car Rental Prices (2026)
Thessaloniki is a competitive mainland market, so prices sit below the island averages. The figures below are typical low-season starting rates; July and August — peak season for Halkidiki — run higher, while spring and autumn offer the best value.
| Car Class | Local All-In / Day | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Economy / Mini (Toyota Aygo, VW Up) | €18–€30 | City & short coastal trips |
| Compact (VW Golf, Opel Astra) | €24–€40 | Halkidiki & motorway days |
| SUV / Crossover (Nissan Qashqai, Dacia Duster) | €38–€60 | Families & mountain roads |
| Super CDW / Full insurance | +€10–€23 | Zero excess, usually no deposit |
Check whether each quote includes Super CDW (full insurance) or only basic CDW with a high €800–€1,500 excess. See our full Greece insurance guide for how SCDW works and what it commonly excludes.
Driving in Thessaloniki: Tolls, Roads and Parking
Thessaloniki's centre is busy but manageable, and once you reach the motorways the driving is fast and easy. The city sits at the crossroads of two major tolled routes.
Tolls and Motorways
The Egnatia Odos (A2) runs east–west across northern Greece — east toward Kavala and the Nestos, west toward Veria, Vergina and on to Meteora — and the A1/PATHE heads south past Mount Olympus toward Larissa and Athens. Both are tolled in sections, typically a euro or two per booth. Keep coins and a card handy, or fit an e-pass transponder that works on every Greek motorway. The roads within Halkidiki are toll-free.
Parking
Use paid car parks in the centre. On-street parking near the waterfront and in the commercial core is limited and controlled, and fines under the 2025 traffic code are steep. Choose accommodation with parking or a nearby public garage, and take the car out mainly for trips beyond the city.
Rules to Remember
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in town (40 in residential zones), 90 rural, 110 expressway, 130 motorway
- A phone in your hand while driving: €350 fine + 30-day licence suspension (2025 code)
- Seatbelts compulsory in every seat; €150 per unbelted person
- Blood-alcohol limit 0.05% (0.02% for drivers in their first two years)
- Fuel is roughly €1.85–€1.95/litre; rental policy is full-to-full
Insurance & Deposit in Thessaloniki
The insurance picture matches the rest of Greece. Basic CDW leaves you liable up to a high excess pre-authorised on a credit card; Super CDW (SCDW / Full Damage Waiver) reduces that excess to zero and, with most local agencies, removes the deposit. It costs about €10–€23 per day.
Read the exclusions first: even on full insurance, tyres, wheels, glass, mirrors, the undercarriage and lost keys are often excluded unless explicitly listed, and driving on unpaved roads voids cover — relevant if you explore the back roads of Halkidiki or Olympus. Photograph the car on every panel and wheel at pick-up and return.
